Finnish cleantech companies in number of sectors have an opportunity to present their solutions to Finpro advisors in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Finpro has direct access to organizers of Expo 2020. Currently the project is at the ideation, design and specification stage.

Note, this sales lead concerns the infrastructure, construction, concepts etc. – i.e. all that needs to be ready before the event itself can take place in 2020.

A few weeks left to influence the plan and specifications

The master plan is in the final stages of preparation and will be confirmed very soon. Once the master plan is finalised no changes will be accepted. Once specifications are ready companies will be invited to take part in tenders.

Examples of needs identified in cleantech sectors (not excluding):

  • smart power use solutions (including a mixture of traditional sources, nuclear and solar)
  • back-up and pop-up power solutions (for various ad hoc country pavilion requirements)
  • ad hoc water source solutions
  • waste water treatment
  • smart waste collection, recycling/treatment, 80% of waste will be organic
  • smart recycling educational solutions for general public
  • smart systems for monitoring, maintenance of equipment and site
  • innovative pest control solutions
  • innovative and sustainable cleaning solutions
  • capture and use of data for planning and operational purposes.

Organisers are open to different ideas at this stage.

Expo site concentrates on innovation, sustainability and mobility:

  • 400+ha site to be fully developed, at the moment only one office building is completed
  • expected 25 million visitors while the Expo is operational (6 months)
  • capacity: 300K visitors or 60K visitors/hr, 1.7 meals per day
  • staff capacity: 20K staff + 30K volunteers + 5K country pavilion staff
  • metro line will run through the site (to be built)
  • new roads and public transportation will be connecting the site
  • site will be located close to the new Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali port
  • legacy needs to be considered (the use of infrastructure and solutions after the expo)

Expo will be organised in the Middle East for the first time and it is treated as a very high profile event and is a matter of highest national priority. More information about expo2020 can be found at

Companies with highly innovative, cost effective and sustainable solutions have good chances to succeed in the UAE. The list is not fully exhaustive, any relevant suggestions and solutions for the Expo are welcomed.
