St1 has released its new premium, low-emissions diesel at St1 stations across Finland. The new Diesel plus is a diesel fuel that combines state-of-the-art technical properties with UPM's new wood-based renewable diesel that is manufactured in Finland.

In its own fuel production, St1 focuses on waste- and residue-based ethanol. The renewable diesel component is produced by UPM at the company's Lappeenranta biorefinery, the world’s first biorefinery of its kind. The main raw material of UPM BioVerno is crude tall oil, which is a residue of UPM's own pulp production.

"We have made huge strides from starting the process development in 2008 to building the world's first biorefinery that produces renewable, wood-based diesel. I think it is great that the Finnish low-emission UPM BioVerno diesel is now available to Finnish consumers through the Finnish energy company St1," says Petri Kukkonen, Vice President of UPM Biofuels.

Adding to its low-emissions qualities, Diesel plus has the highest cetane number (60+) in the market, providing instant torque, while an optimized blend of additives keeps nozzles and combustion chambers clean to enable the engine to run more efficiently and economically.

"Diesel plus has several important properties that diesel car owners appreciate, such as instant torque. And now, we had the opportunity to start using UPM's new high-quality diesel as part of our fuel mix. UPM BioVerno is produced from forest industry residues and supports efforts to replace imported fossil fuels with renewable domestic fuel," says Mika Wiljanen, Managing Director of St1.

The premium Diesel plus fuel is suitable for all diesel engines, from passenger cars to heavy duty vehicles and machinery. It costs the same as regular diesel.
