Silk Road: mega-investments and global effect chains

China's goal is to create a significant land and maritime route from China to Europe. The new Silk Road discussion ramped up at the end of 2013, when China launched the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and "21st Century Maritime Silk Road” programs to strengthen China's long-term economic success and global leadership position. The two programs became known as "One Belt One Road".

The effects are expected to be broad, starting with improved efficiency and changes in the logistics chain, moving lower added-value production from China to Southeast Asia, enormous new physical and digital infrastructure projects and standardization of traffic between different countries. The effects will be felt throughout Asia, but also in Europe and Africa.

Many countries along the routes are interested in taking China's munificent hand and aim to benefit from their position as transit points. One of these countries is Kazakhstan, whose strategy is to be the crossroads for transit traffic between China and Europe.

Team Finland Future Watch has launched a project aimed at understanding what this century's largest infrastructure project means in practice and what types of business opportunities it can present for Finnish companies in the short and long term. The first part of the event, "On the trail of the new Silk Road: mega-investments and global effect chains," was held at the beginning of the year at Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The second part will now address new openings for businesses in Kazakhstan.

New openings in Kazakhstan for businesses?

Companies can find substitutive or additional markets in Kazakhstan to compensate for the current challenging situation in Russian markets. Country belongs to the Eurasian Economic Union, and it’s technical specifications for imported products are consistent with those in Russia. Companies can also apply their knowledge of Russia in these countries. Our event will offer information and advice to companies about operating in the Kazakhstan markets. The participants will include experts in the Kazakhstan markets from Finpro and the Embassy of Finland in Astana.

The international exhibition Astana Expo 2017 will be held in Kazakhstan in 2017. Finland will take part in the Expo with its own pavilion with the theme Финляндия – чистая энергия, Sharing Pure Energy. The Finnish pavilion will offer all Finnish companies an excellent platform to strengthen their business operations in Kazakhstan or to begin conquering Central Asian markets. The event will include representatives of the Astana Expo team, who will discuss available opportunities.

We hope that you will send questions in advance to aleksej.leppanen@finpro.fi so that we can better prepare our answers.

The event is being organized by Team Finland (Future Watch) Tekes and Finpro in collaboration with the Confederation of Finnish Industries.
